When it comes to training an animal, there is no doubt that different limitations apply to different animals. Anyone who has seen a dog show will know that dogs can be trained to do a great number of things. Training a cat is certainly possible, but there is no doubt whatsoever that most of the training you can give a cat is corrective rather than creative (joking)
. It is important to be aware of this before you set out to train your cat.
Undoubtedly, it would be fun if a cat could be trained to run around an obstacle course like dogs can. I’m sure that if you find that special cat that’s willing to work with you anything is possible. However, you should always keep the nature of a cat in mind so that you don’t get too frustrated. It’s in a cat’s nature to be independent, so sometimes they just won’t work with you. However, if you teach them a reward system then they usually do!
Cats can fetch things that they find interesting. For example, my cat just loves to fetch a crumbled up piece of paper! His attention is very focused like a dog and he won’t move until you throw it! I don’t have to give him treats to do this, it’s just part of play time.
You might not be able to convince a cat to do all the same things that a dog can, but cats do have a creative streak in them. Trust me, they will surprise you with some really interesting things! I really feel that you just have to work with the cat that you have. Each cat can be trained differently.
Sometimes, through practice, a cat will begin to do things that entertain, but this will be as a pleasant side-effect of a fuller training program. After all, cats like to play. Just give them a catnip mouse and watch them go. Also if you want to train your cat, have a lot of small cat treats around and give it to them, plus verbally congratulate them whenever they do a trick you like!
